Rachel is an LSV lawyer who can advise Vermonters who are overwhelmed by unpaid bills and debts.

“When people first encounter the legal system, there’s often a power imbalance,” says Rachel. “Our role is to provide information on how to navigate the system. Without help, it would be very difficult for many people.”

Rachel often works on debt collection cases, where Vermonters have become burdened with bills they cannot pay. There’s often a debt collection lawyer on the other side, so Rachel is in the client’s corner to provide advice and support.

“I make them aware of their rights and protections,” she says. For example, debt collectors can’t collect certain amounts of a Vermonter’s income or assets. And if someone’s on public benefits, they may not be able to collect money from that person at all.

“People appreciate having someone to talk to about their options. It’s a relief to them.”
