Maggie is an LSV attorney who focuses on housing law and Social Security benefits. Her day-to-day work includes helping tenants understand their rights, preventing evictions, and advocating for clients whose public benefits have been reduced or terminated.

“When people call me for the first time, they are often experiencing a high-stress, emotional and overwhelming situation. It is usually a combination of anxiety, fear, exhaustion and frustration.”

“Most callers are lost in a maze of acronyms and bureaucracy. I like to offer them a map by explaining their rights and demystifying the process. Instead of telling them what to do, I’ll lay out a path available so that they can regain control. Many times, this can be discussing the pros and cons of different filing strategies, identifying immediate safety nets such as emergency rental assistance, or helping them identify tangible next steps.”

Maggie says helping vulnerable Vermonters is extremely rewarding, especially when she can turn around a crisis situation. “Overturning wrongful Social Security terminations can reinstate crucial disability and medical insurance benefits,” she says. “This can be a huge relief to our clients.”

Preventing eviction can be equally life-changing. “Housing is more than just property — it is stability and a home,” Maggie says. “My most impactful housing cases are those where I‘ve helped negotiate with opposing parties to ensure families can remain in their homes.”
